I have saved some of the best planks of Douglas fir from the cache used for the Unicorn mandolins of the 1970s. And now it will be used in a Unicorn Commemorative model which is based on the Phoenix Select model. The legendary voice will come from the super-fine-grained fir top with fir tone bars. The back, neck, and sides will be highly-figured red maple, as used in many of the Unicorns, but there will be no body binding. Macassar ebony will replace the Brazilian rosewood of the originals. The headstock will have a hand-cut mother-of-pearl full unicorn which was used on the earliest Unicorn mandolins. Color will be a vintage maple shaded out to a dark brown---close to the shading of the Unicorns. Moose bone will replace the elephant ivory in the nut. The Select model tailpiece will be used for external Phoenix identification, but an original Unicorn label will be modified for internal identification. Price is set at $4,000.
